The Spicer is a story about lived experience of hearing voices and psychiatric diagnosis. Written and illustrated by award winning artist and mental health thought leader, Nathan Grixti, The Spicer was created in response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, and its subsequent failure to acknowledge within its terms of reference the violence, abuse and human rights violations which continue to occur on a daily basis in Australia’s public mental health system.
In 2019 The Spicer had a small physical print run, and was also accepted as a formal submission and published online on the Royal Commission’s website at https://rcvmhs.vic.gov.au/submissions .
