PRESTON PEACE was born in a brainstorming session by two guys in a café. Says co-creator Jason Towers: “We came up with the idea of a [dead] boy who returned to school post-life, which gave us the hook for slapstick with lots of action and kid-level gruesome stuff. The focus was on outlandish situations and as much sport as we could cram in.” It was envisioned as a new strip to pitch to a children’s magazine that was already running one of Dillon Naylor’s best-known characters, Batrisha The Vampire Girl! The result? It was rejected by the kid’s magazine for being too gory.

Dillon designed and drew the pilot episode and two more were illustrated by Owen Heitmann. The result is the hilarious misadventures of a corpse who was simply not allowed to rest in peace until he got better grades and won the school’s Most Valuable Player award. How does that work exactly? Only one way to find out.

BATTLERS INC dates back even earlier! Sketches of “Ocker Superheros” scattered through Dillon’s old notebooks from the 1990s for a possible showbag comic book…which slowly fermented into what he describes as ‘The Fantastic Four in the style of Bazza McKenzie’. These were four heroes dressed for action, spouting 1970s slang and nationalistic jingoisms, but had no actual super powers as such…except for an insane level of enthusiasm.
