My grandmother Ada Louise came to live with us when I was about eight years old. By then, Ada was extremely old and frail. Ada Louise wasn’t like other grandmothers I knew or the kindly ones in children’s books. Very occasionally there was a glint of amusement in her eyes, but mostly she just looked wistful, even sad.
